God’s Approval - John 12:37-43

It's been a few years, but I'll never forget Eric and Joey and Brian and Craig and the other Brian and Jason and Brandon and Ryan, when they'd meet at my home every Friday before school from ninth grade until they graduated for a time of Bible study and to learn to become Christian leaders in their high school.

Family Discussions:

  1. Why is the approval of men often more valued than the approval of God?
  2. And as grownups, man, how do we struggle with prioritizing man's approval over God's approval in our life?
  3. Why is it that God's approval is way more important than man's approval?
  4. What can you do today to go after God's approval in your life?

Episode Transcription:

00:13 Well, today I want to tell you about a bunch of really cool high school guys that used to eat doughnuts at my house every Friday morning and some of the things we discovered together. We're in John chapter 12, verses 37 through 43, and it says this, "Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe. But this was to fulfill the word of Isaiah, the prophet which said this, 'Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?' For this reason, they could not believe because as Isaiah says elsewhere, 'He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts so they can neither see with their eyes nor understand with their hearts nor turn, and I would heal them.' Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. Yet at the same time, many even among the leaders believed in him, but because of the Pharisees, they would not confess their faith for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue for they loved the praise of men rather than the praise from God."

01:29 Wow. I tell you, we had a blast together. Man, if anyone missed, they would actually get a doughnut in their locker, in their shoe, or in their book, or in their sports bag so they made strong commitments to be there. And of course their biggest commitment was to God.

02:13 You know, a lot of times these guys, even though they were the best athletes in the school, the neatest guys in school, they weren't invited to the fun parties, you know, down at the lake. People often call them names behind their back, but their senior year in high school four of them were elected football captains, three led the basketball team, two lead the golf team, one received the school spirit award, one was chosen as most outstanding senior. The school won the All Sports Trophy for the conference because those guys pulled the school together like glue. You know what, man? We called them "the guys," and the approval of men was not their worry. The approval of God was far more important. That school will never be the same.

03:00 Here's my questions today. Why is the approval of men often more valued than the approval of God? And as grownups, man, how do we struggle with prioritizing man's approval over God's approval in our life? You know, why is it that God's approval is way more important than man's approval? And lastly, man, what can you do today to go after God's approval in your life? And here's the lifeline that we can work on together as a family, and let's build this family and let's bind this family together for God's approval.
